Best free "interactive fiction" games

GAME GENRE – Interactive Fiction (IF) is one of the oldest forms of computer gaming, dating back to a time when a few lines of text and a keyboard were enough to create an entire adventure. These games are primarily story-driven, with players exploring locations, examining objects, solving puzzles, and interacting with characters by typing simple commands such as “open door” or “take key.” The game responds with descriptions of what happens next, allowing the player to shape the story through their actions. While some later IF titles added illustrations, sound, or other graphical elements, text remains at the heart of the experience. For players willing to use their imagination, a good IF game can turn a screen full of words into a surprisingly large world.
